Echoes of the Fallen

A SONG OF REMEMBRANCE FOR SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.

A song of remembrance.

A prayer for those we lost.

And a refusal to let darkness have the final word.

The story behind the song

Echoes of the Fallen is a song by Shatterglass Scallywags, written by Greg Schlueter as a remembrance of September 11, 2001. It begins where that morning began — steel, stone, and a sky that changed — and refuses to stop there.

The verses stay in the wreckage: two towers, torn hearts, streets under a heavy veil of sorrow. They hold the people who were lost that day, and the ones who ran toward the fire for strangers. The choruses turn. From the ashes, something rises — not a slogan about resilience, but a claim that the dead are not silent and that the light was never actually extinguished.

It is a rock song, and it is also a prayer. The pre-chorus says so plainly: Holy One in heaven, come near and hear our cry. That is the hinge the whole song turns on — grief and hope in the same room, which is where most of us have lived since.

I remember September 11 not simply as an event in American history, but as one of those moments when the veil seemed to tear. We saw horror. We saw courage. We saw strangers become neighbors.

Echoes of the Fallen came from wanting to remember both the wound and what rose from it — and from a conviction that grief and hope are not opposites. They live in the same room.

Twenty-five years on

September 11, 2026 marks twenty-five years since the attacks. A generation has now grown up for whom that morning is history rather than memory.

This page exists so the song has a permanent home — somewhere a person can go to listen, read the words, and sit with them for four minutes. That is the whole intention. Nothing is being sold here.

Words by Greg Schlueter

VERSE 1

When the sun rose that fateful morn, shadows cast by steel and stone,Two towers crumbled, hearts were torn, as terror claimed its throne.Beneath the weight of maligned desire, heavens wept, and earth mourned,Yet from the ruins, rose a choir of hearts pierced by a sword.

PRE-CHORUS

Holy One in heaven!Come near and hear our cry!Make these broken hearts whole!Into darkness breathe Your life!

CHORUS

From the ashes of the towers, where shadows drift away,Rise echoes of the fallen, to love's eternal day.See the light of timeless truth, feel it breaking through the storm,The flame has been ignited, the Kingdom is being born.

VERSE 2

In the silence of the streets, where sorrow laid its heavy veil,An unseen host ignited flames of hope that never fail.Hear their echoes to loved ones dear, still whispered through the hazeMighty words to change this world in heaven's holy embrace.

BRIDGE

Let illusions crumble, idols fade,In the chaos, we stand unafraid. From the ruins, spirits soar, nothing can hurt us anymoreIn the heart of our endless home, we raise one voice before the Throne.

OUTRO

So let the world remember, lessons from the past,In the embers of sacred sorrow, our spirits ever last. From the ashes, we ascend, with visions bold and clear,In love's eternal fire, our purpose is held dear.
