Shatterglass Scallywags
Can We Be Human Again?
A CRY FOR HUMAN DIGNITY IN A DISORIENTED AGE.
When common sense is made to feel dangerous.
When language conceals more than it reveals.
When the person before us disappears behind the argument.
Can we be human again?
Released September 18, 2026 — single · 4:23
The first release from Love Louder.
The story behind the song
Can We Be Human Again? began with a simple permission: shout it out. Shatterglass Scallywags had carried urgency before, but this song asked for a harder edge—a sound equal to the pressure of the question.
It comes from a world where people are asked not to see what is plainly before them; where common sense is steadily eroded, words are bent until they lose their meaning, and human beings are reduced to positions, categories and threats.
But the song is not finally a political argument. It is a cry for recovery: sight, sanity, mercy, truth—and the dignity of the person standing in front of us.
The question is not aimed only at “them.” It belongs to all of us.
Can we resist becoming what the age rewards?
Can we tell the truth without surrendering love?
Can we become human again?
Love Louder · First release
A song for this hour
This page gives the song one permanent home: a place to hear it, read the words, and stay with the question beneath the noise.
It is the first release from Love Louder—and the first opening into the larger work still to come.
Lyrics
Words by Greg Schlueter
CAN WE BE HUMAN AGAIN?
Look with your eyes.Tell me what you see. Then listen while they tell youWhat reality should be.
VERSE 1
Anti-fascists with a fist in your face,Preaching tolerance while they put you in place.“Black lives matter”—till a black man says no,Step outside the line, see how fast love goes. “Freedom.”“Healthcare.”“Choice” on the tongue—Clean little wordsWhere the blood has run.Call it whateverMakes the killing sell—No clean word can wash the bloodOr make a heaven out of hell. A man becomes a woman.A mother says, “Not mine.”Truth becomes hatredWhen it crosses the line.We erase every boundary,Then wonder what remains—And Mad takes the gavelWhile we argue over names.
REFRAIN
Can we be human again? Can we look with our eyesAnd believe what we see?Can I stand where I standWithout making you my enemy? Can truth still have mercy? Can love still call things wrong? Can we be human againBefore the human is gone?
VERSE 2
Woke.Rage.Left.Right.Keep us throwing punchesAt each other every night. CNN.MSNBC.Fox feeds the flame.Different colored jerseys,Same profitable game. “Don’t look behind the curtain.”“Everything is fine.”“The big guy’s at his sharpest.”Seriously? You saw it with your eyes. Strings on our fingers.Strings on our feeds. There’s money in our anger,There’s power in our needs.Keep the marionettes fighting.Keep everybody spun. While the Wizard counts the moneyWhen the damage has been done.
